Quote Calculator: driveway and walkway inputs, cost per push, price per push and green price checks

How a quote is built

Every step is visible on the Quote Calculator, so you can see where the price comes from.

  1. Measure the property: driveway length × width plus any parking pad, walkway length × width, and steps. Then pick the equipment, complexity, slope, windrow, salting and miles.
  2. Minutes: your equipment's minutes per 1,000 sq ft plus windrow and setup, and walks and steps by hand or small blower, × complexity and slope.
  3. Cost per push: labor (wage + burden), equipment $/hr, travel and overhead. That's your break-even.
  4. Price: cost ÷ (1 − margin), rounded up to your step, never below your minimum price per push. Deeper snow tiers, salting and an hourly rate follow.
  5. Season: the pushes and salt applications of the winter you price for, at your margin, with an optional push cap, payments and a prepay price. Season Scenarios tests it against a light and a heavy winter.

Example from the sample file

60 × 24 ft driveway (1,440 sq ft), 60 ft of 4 ft walkway, 5 steps, walk-behind snowblower, average complexity, windrow cleared, 3 miles

Time on site (0.62 person-hrs)37 min
Price per push, 2–4 in (cost $30.52 at 30% margin)$45
4–8 in / 8 in and up$60 / $80
Salt add-on / salt-only visit$15 / $20
Seasonal contract (normal winter: 20 pushes, 25 salt applications)$1,200
4 payments / prepaid (5% off)$300 / $1,140
Heavy-winter safe price$1,500

Each push earns $51.49 per person-hour against $28 wage + burden. The $1,200 contract includes up to 25 pushes; in a heavy winter (30 pushes) the 5 extra are billed at the per-push price for their depth, $1,473 in all, which earns 15.8%, under the 30% goal, so the calculator flags it. Good / Better / Best season: $750 / $1,025 / $1,325. Figures from the kit's sample settings.

Inside the workbook

  • 4 kinds of equipment (shovel, snowblower, plow truck, tractor / UTV; rename freely) with your own minutes per 1,000 sq ft and running cost per hour, plus walkway and step minutes, windrow time, slope and complexity.
  • 3 snow depth tiers you set, in inches or cm, and salting priced as an add-on or its own visit from your ice-melt product's rate and cost.
  • Good / Better / Best packages per season, with the profit on each, printed on the proposal.
  • Price List: per-push prices for 5 driveway sizes (1-car to a small commercial lot) by equipment, deeper-snow prices and a seasonal price per size.

Good to know

  • Small driveways often hit the minimum price per push, so their price-list rows look flat. That's intended; lower the minimum to change it.
  • The storm counts on Season Scenarios are samples. Enter your own records or your area's climate normals (Environment and Climate Change Canada or NOAA).
  • Vehicle cost per mile is prefilled with the IRS 2026 business rate (76¢ for July–December). A plow truck costs more; in Canada, enter your own cost per mile.
  • In Excel, protected sheets don't allow inserting rows. Unprotect them (Review › Unprotect Sheet, no password) to change the layout.
  • Areas are in square feet, snow depth in inches or cm, and forms are US Letter. The math works in any dollar currency, and the forms are fully editable.

Questions

How does the calculator come up with a price?

It works out the driveway and walkway area, then the person-minutes for your equipment (shovel, snowblower, plow truck or tractor), the end-of-driveway windrow, walks and steps, adjusted for complexity and slope. Labor (wage plus burden), equipment, travel and overhead give the break-even cost per push. The price is that cost at your margin, rounded up and never below your minimum price per push, with deeper snow tiers, salting, an hourly rate and a seasonal contract priced from the same numbers.

How many storms should I plan for?

That depends on where you work, so the kit doesn't guess. On Season Scenarios you enter the pushes and salt applications for a light, normal and heavy winter from your own records or your area's climate normals. The prefilled numbers are marked as samples.

Are the default numbers right for my area?

They're starting assumptions ($25/hr wage, 12% burden, 30% margin, $45 minimum push, $8 overhead per visit), not market research. Time a few driveways, adjust the minutes per 1,000 sq ft for your equipment, and put in your own costs.

Does it work for a crew or a plow truck?

Yes. Set workers per crew and pick the plow truck or tractor. It shows both person-hours and time on site, and walkways are priced as hand or small-blower work.

Does it work in Google Sheets?

Yes. Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive, open it, then choose File › Save as Google Sheets. It uses only functions both apps support, with no macros. Google Sheets doesn't keep Excel's formula protection, so type only in the yellow cells there.

Can I get a refund?

Bought on this website and changed your mind before we've emailed your files? Email [email protected] and we'll refund you in full, no questions asked. Once the files are sent, they can't be returned, so there are no change-of-mind refunds, but if something doesn't work or isn't what you expected, contact us and we'll make it right. Etsy purchases are an instant download, so the before-sending refund doesn't apply to them; see the terms.
